Almost didn’t post today

Not really having much in the way of blog posts today, since I was messing around with blender, trying to do some 3d modeling and animation. There are just some things I’ll never be able to do. Never be able to play professional sports, never be an astronaut, never king of my own country. Add to that list never be a 3d modeler or animator. It just isn’t going to happen.

But I feel bad for not having a post today, so I’ll share a sort of not too original idea for a game. It’s largely based on the idea bringing shadow of the colossus style gameplay into the modern age. Now before you get mad at the lack of originality, let me defend this by saying that there is a lot of untapped potential in this sort of thing. Shadow of the Colossus provided an excellent mix of puzzle, figuring out how to actually climb up and defeat the colossus, and action, actually successfully climbing and slaying it, and not many developers seem to interested in trying anything like that.

In this proposed game of mine, you would not be alone. Think of Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, or any similar game, where the player commands an elite squad with the most advanced gear. Before you even attack the giant monster, you can use a UAV, or unmanned aerial vehicle, to scout out the area, look for weak points or places to climb onto the monster, as well as look for environmental advantages, etc.

There might be any number of different tactics to use against the various enemies in the game. You might use smoke grenades to mask your movement as you approach it, you might have to use a sniper to shoot a weak points, you might have a member of your squad open fire with machine gun to distract it, eventually however the goal will be the same as Shadow of the Colossus, find a way climb onto it and attack the weak points. Instead of using a sword as in Shadow of the Colossus, I thought a more modern method would be to plant C4 at weak points and blow it up.

In order for this game to be a success it will mainly need two things. First, as in Shadow of the Colossus, climbing up the enemies in the game must be really epic and fun. Possibly more important is what happens before you even climb up. I think the first colossus was the only one where you could just walk up to it and climb up. All the other ones had varied and interesting things that had to be done in order to give you the opportunity to climb up. Being able to come up with interesting ways to get onto the enemies in this game will be very important.

Well that post looks pretty lame, but I wasted a lot of time in blender, so this is the best I have today. Maybe I’ll have something better tomorrow. Be sure to leave any comments if you think this idea is good/bad and any suggestions you might have to extend the idea.
